Young Northern Sinfonia
41 young players - Young Sinfonia is the prestigious regional youth orchestra based at Sage Gateshead made up of around 40 players and trained by visiting conductors and members of Royal Northern Sinfonia. Young Sinfonia brings together outstanding young string, wind, brass and percussion players from the North of England. Members are aged 13-19 and play at the standard of grade 7/8 and above. Over the past few years the orchestra has been conducted by international figures such as Garry Walker, Ainars Rubikis, Nicholas Kraemer and Jurjen Hempel and been joined by distinguished soloists such as Howard Shelley, and Mark Simpson, as well as providing concerto opportunities for its members. Young Sinfonia perform concerts in venues across the Northeast and also far and wide on international tours. In 2014 they formed a partnership with the Solingen Youth Orchestra who visited the North East before Young Sinfonia spent a week in Germany playing repertoire by Dvorak and Mendelssohn. Programme choices reflect their close partnership with Royal Northern Sinfonia, covering 350 years of classical music from Bach to Butterworth. Young Sinfonia are delighted to spend this year’s Easter residency with conductor Justin Doyle on the Isle of Skye and perform Beethoven’s third symphony at the Sabhal Mor Ostaig.
