Inner Sound Youth Section

Inner Sound Youth Section

A children's opera in one act for all the family. It lasts for 1 hour with no interval. Inner Sound is a group of enthusiastic and energetic folk who love getting together to indulge in their passion for singing. Most of our members come from Skye and Lochalsh, although there are a few who travel from as far as Inverness to join in the fun. Inner Sound would not exist without our founder, and we are grateful to Ann Lampard for her boundless energy, knowledge and enthusiasm. In her many years of successful teaching, particularly at the Junior Royal Academy of Music in London, she gained invaluable experience at getting the best out of each one of her students, and making it fun in the process! In recognition for her services to music Ann was awarded an MBE in 2015. We are delighted to have her at the helm of our own happy band of singers, and grateful for her dedication to the continuing success of Inner Sound. This is the first production with the cast drawn entirely from our younger members. Benjamin Britten wrote 'The Little Sweep' , a one act Opera, for seven teenaged voices and three adult voices. It is perfect Britten Opera in miniature, with great bouncing tunes and witty ensembles and choruses. It is set in the 19th century in a large country house in Suffolk where Juliet Brook and her sisters Sophie and Gay live. The Crome cousins, Hughie and Jonny, accompanied by their nurserymaid Rowan, are visiting the family in the school holidays and are horrified by the poor little sweep boy, who has been sold by his father to the wicked sweeps, Black Bob and Clem. The horrid housekeeper, Miss Baggot and the evil sweeps are continuously duped by the children who eventually manage to set the young sweep free with a couple of silver crowns in his pocket ! It is based upon a story supposedly told by a housekeeper in a large country house in Suffolk, where Britten lived. This lady narrated the story as it had been told to her by her grandmother. It is also a sad social comment on the abuse and exploitation of poor children in the Victorian era. Ann says what a joy and privilege it is to be able to produce and direct this challenging work using ten of the most talented young singers she has taught, and everyone of them living in Skye and Lochalsh !
