'The Island and the Whales' Film (84 mins)

The live screening of 'The Island and the Whales' starts at 7pm and is followed at 8.30pm by a live Q and A session from Picturehouse Central in London where Channel 4's Jon Snow will be joined by director Mike Day and special guests from across the environmental community to discuss the film and its wider global implications. Bring your mobile phone so you can contribute to the conversation with questions and comments. Small fishing communities of the Faroe Islands, an isolated Nordic archipelago in the North Atlantic, endure an uneasy period of transition as disparate global pressures—including animal rights activism, plummeting wildlife populations and mercury crawling up the ocean food chain—threaten traditional hunting and fishing practices. Graphic hunting scenes in this vivid documentary are interspersed with portraits of irascible community members who are resistant to change, all amid a landscape of eerie, solitary beauty. The film was funded by Creative Scotland and comes from the same house as 'The Bridge Rising' about the Skye Bridge that we presented in 2016. Presented in conjunction with Sleat Community Trust Environmental Group.
