Margaret Bennett and Skip Gorman
The Crofters and Cowboys brings together two distinctive styles of music and song found in the American West and rooted in the lifestyles, landscapes and traditions of Scotland. Skip Gorman brings back to life the simple, yet beautifully poignant music that was performed around campfires by cowboys and westward settlers in the 19th century. He brings a scholar’s knowledge of the cowboy’s Celtic, Spanish and Afro-American roots as well as the personal experience gained by working as a cowboy on a ranch in Wyoming, along with an exquisite touch as a singer, guitarist, fiddler and mandolinist. Margaret Bennett, Gaelic singer from Skye, is widely regarded as Scotland's foremost folklorist. A former lecturer at the University of Edinburgh School of Scottish Studies, she teaches part-time at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, who "wears her scholarship lightly". Margaret sings, tells stories and lectures on both sides of the Atlantic. "It is rare to witness such a charismatic and fascinating raconteur." The evening opens with a set from the young Cèiidh Trailers and finishes with some cèilidh dancing.Date: 21/07/18
