Title: 'A Funny Valentine' - Mike Maran, Colin Steele
Description: It's 1961 and Chet Baker is in jail in Lucca. The life and music of the iconic American jazz trumpeter, Chet Baker, is told by Mike Maran, with Colin Steele on trumpet and Dave Milligan on piano. In Italy Chet had been voted the best rumpet player in the world - now he's doing time in an Itlaian jail for drug offences. Italians strolling around the town walls stop and listen to the sound of Chet's golden trumpet wafting through the prison bars. Chet shared his prison cell with a story-teller. Only he knows the whole story - and now he's telling it. "Beautifully conceived and executed: Colin Steele's music has instant appeal; Mike Maran is a mesmeric story-teller; Dave Milligan is a pianist of astonishing verve and subtlety"

Nigel Richard was originally a folk-blues guitarist in a group he shared with Dick Lee in the 1980s. Title: NYOS Jazz Orchestra Summer Tour 'The Power of Nature'
Description: This summer NYOS Jazz Orchestra presents a profusion of cool jazz in a two-part concert. We celebrate the music of Joe Zawinul’s groundbreaking group Weather Report. The 1970s were one of the most exciting periods in jazz, and after the emergence of rock and roll, the inevitable fusion of jazz and rock came of age. Never more so than in the music of Weather Report, blending grooves and improvisation, through-composed melodies and evolving ensemble textures. The Jazz Orchestra is then joined by beatboxer, sound artist and vocal sculptor Jason Singh. Jason is a composer, solo artist and collaborator who is well known on Skye for his work with Atlas arts, with Gaelic singer Anne Martin and the World Premiere of 'Lahira' at last year's Festival. Director of Jazz at NYOS Malcolm Edmonstone has worked closely with Jason to select aspects of his extensive creative projects, and arranged these for NYOS Jazz Orchestra and vocalists. A challenging yet mouth-watering prospect, we hope you agree. Buy tickets for both concerts and get £2 off.

Description: World Premier - New commission for the Skye Jazz Festival of ‘Common Ground’ a new work mixing jazz and traditional music. Featuring some of the very best of the UK jazz scene mixed with players of a similar pedigree from the UK folk/Trad scene, Nigel promises an interesting blend of the two genres. "My idea is to create a project fusing the Celtic folk style (instruments such as fiddle/accordion) with jazz rhythm section. I hope the compositions will reflect both genres equally, showcasing the talents of folk musicians while giving ample space for improvisation. Although I have been a jazz/studio musician for my entire career I now live on Skye and wish to showcase the talents I have met in Scotland in the last 5 years with the great players I have always associated with on the jazz scene in London. I feel there is something new and special to add to this field of music, and it should appeal to listeners of all styles." Here's hoping! "destined to be a worldwide jazz star" Don Mather www.skyejazzfestival.com

Title: Skye Swing Jazz Festival - Duets
Description: The final event of the Festival is an intimate evening of duets, hosted by Rick Taylor, trombone and vocals, and Cameron Skerrow, guitar, with songs from across the decades, from the Great American Song Book. Rick and Cameron first performed together as a duo at this year’s Skye Festival with the NYJOS Summer School. Brian MacAlpine and Jonny Hardie are two of Scotland’s stars of traditional music. Their appearance at a Jazz Festival is unusual, but they are no strangers to improvisation, with a free-wheeling approach to the sets; their ability to inspire and stretch one another and the on-the-spot arrangements that sound so crafted. And the craic between them means you won’t care about genre - you’’ll just love them and their music. No Jazz event, especially with SEALL, can possibly take place without a visit from bass player Mario Caribé, especailly when he is joined by saxophonist Phil Bancroft. The music flows in tandem and the direction is never predictable always changing and finding unexpected twists & turns in a true conversation with instruments. And then all six come together for a final mind-blowing session.

Title: Skye's World Music - ' Wadada' the Indian Fusion show.
Description: Michael Wadada has been the driving force for 20 years of the Suns of Arqa, playing ultra-eclectic world dub influences from such diverse sources as India, Africa, Scotland, Iran, America, England, Ireland and Jamaica. Wadada has spent much of his musical career investigating what he describes as the supernatural potential hidden in the Classical Raga of the music of India. His mission is to mix the cerebral and illusive cosmological vibrations of Raga with the mother Earth rhythms of Niyabinghi drumming that he believed surfaced in the UK over the years in the guise of Dub Reggae. The Bharat Natyam dancer, Vinata Godbole, from Rochdale, learned classical dancing at a college in Madras and has since had TV appearances with the Teletubbies.

Title: The Dime Notes
Description: “Inspired” – SUNDAY TIMES “Lovingly curated examples of great music from the ancestral repertoire of jazz” – JAZZ DA GAMA “Swings from start to finish” – JUST JAZZ “Laid-back swing and clever interplay makes their music feel fresh and vibrant” – JAZZ SOCIETY OF OREGON The Dime Notes dig back into the blues-drenched sounds of clarinet-driven 1920’s New Orleans jazz, unearthing a repertoire of stomps, blueses, and forgotten gems of the era from musicians such as Johnny Dodds, Jelly Roll Morton and Red Nichols. The band grew out of a duo project with Chris Barber’s long-time clarinetist David Horniblow and American pianist Andrew Oliver, who arrived in London in 2013 and met David at a gig. They got together to play some Jelly Roll Morton tunes and began a weekly residency at an east London cocktail bar, working on a repertoire of obscure 1920s tunes. After a year or so, the duo expanded with the addition of the unstoppable pulse of London’s finest rhythm guitarist Dave Kelbie and young bassist Tom Wheatley, who added a new dimension and depth to the band, which quickly became popular both at clubs and swing dances in London. Since the release of their debut album on Lejazzetal Records in 2016, the band has toured extensively in the UK, with appearances at festivals and theatres throughout the country as well as in France and the Netherlands. Their album has received positive reviews from the press both nationally and internationally, and will be re-released in France in partnership with Fremeaux in 2018. They have partnered with the award-winning Scottish bean-to-bar chocolate company IQ Choc to create the Dime Notes signature Espresso-Kick chocolate bar, and 2018 will see the band touring in England, Scotland, Germany, France, Hungary, Moldova, France, and Canada. The Dime Notes present a fresh take on a timeless style, emphasizing the propulsive grooves and sultry melodies which made early jazz revolutionary, controversial, and wildly popular.

Description: Award-winning violinist Tim Kliphuis is a legend in the gypsy world. His Trio with Nigel Clark (guitar) and Roy Percy (bass) perform “the most breathtaking instrumental show you’ll hear this year” – an exciting and profoundly musical blend of gypsy jazz, classical and folk music. The Tim Kliphuis Trio were founded in 2006, after meeting in a small Russian cultural café in Glasgow called Café Cossachok. Starting out with Grappelli jazz on their first tours in the Scottish Highlands - including SEALL - they quickly developed a personal sound including other styles and repertoire from classical and folk music. Tim Kliphuis combines dazzling perfection and complete musical freedom like no-one else in the world. Nigel Clark (guitar) has worked with some of the biggest names in jazz and pop throughout the last 15 years and has toured the world as a leader, sideman and accompanist. Roy Percy (double bass) has been a driving force in many bands since the 1980s. His unique bass slapping techniques, unrivalled in Europe, and his subtle dynamic feel make for a great range of emotions.
