Title: 'Lifeboat' - Catherine Wheels Theatre
Description: Winner of the Barclays Stage Award for Best Show, 'Lifeboat' tells the tale of two 15-year-old evacuees who spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat. On Friday 13 September 1940, 'The City of Benares' set sail from Liverpool for Canada. On board were 90 evacuees escaping the seemingly unyielding bombing and the never-ending rationing and other repercussions of war-torn Britain. Four days into the crossing, the ship was torpedoed by the Nazis in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and sunk. Only 11 of the evacuees survived, among them were Bess Walder and Beth Cumming, willing each other to survive in a force-eight gale until help arrived. Director and founder of Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, Gill Robertson, first came across the remarkable story of Bess and Beth in a magazine article: "I immediately thought that this was a fantastic story that had to be told, but I also thought it was near enough impossible to stage. I spoke to scriptwriter Nicola McCartney about the story and it really captured her imagination too, so we set about working out how we could bring it alive for young audiences.". They were both lucky enough to then visit Bess at home and hear her story. "A wonderful, affectionate portrait of wartime family life, with a powerful feeling for the popular music and culture ... there's the sheer passion and spirit of two brilliant actors who bring the story alive, so much so, that at the end the audience wiped the tears from their eyes and rose to give them a standing ovation." (The Scotsman Critic's Choice) "Every child in the UK should see this show" (2013 - audience) "Enjoyable and moving - brought to life wartime experiences that history books cannot" (2013 - audience) Read more about Bess and Beth at http://www.independent.co.uk/news/obituaries/bess-cummings-one-of-the-last-survivors-of-the-sinking-of-the-ss-city-of-benares-in-1940-2082612.html

Title: 'The Boy Who Bit Picasso' - Untied Artists
Description: When Picasso comes to stay, anything can happen. . . The story, based on a real-life incident involving the son of the photographer Lee Miller, is a sweet little tale about a sulky schoolboy who bonds with a Clouseau-ish, beret-wearing, bull-obsessed painter, spouting French and Spanish but very little English. What makes the show, however, are the regular pauses in which to let the kids get on with mask-making, collages, and drawing – all of which pertain brilliantly to the story, and subliminally allow them to absorb some of Picasso’s artistic ideas. At one point, the children are encouraged to inolve the parents and adults. "The childllike joy of Picasso's painting is brilliantly conveyed, and kids, like mine, will come out learning that art is fun." SEALL has already seen the play and particularly encouraged the company to come north. Like all good children's theatre is is totally brilliant for adults (in fact they MUST be there, see above!) as well, and, in this case, great anyone with who paints or has children who love painting and colours. The play lasts 70 minutes. "Channels the spirit of the artists . . . a sweet little tale." The Guardian. https://youtu.be/RldDU6kTPIE

Description: A family full of extraordinary eccentricities, delusions and behaviours which must be kept private at all costs. Unmentionable things and secrets (mum has lost her job, dad has replaced himself with a professional actor while he lives it up in Barbados) pale into insignificance when, in the middle of one stormy night a sixteenth century Spanish galleon complete with conquistador crashes into the side of their house. Everyone is hell bent on getting the boat ready to relaunch. By 5am bilges have been pumped, sails sewn, rigging rerigged and they’re ready to launch but it just won’t budge. The family sneak outside cannot believe their eyes. There is no back of the boat. The house looks totally normal. How will they break it to the conquistador?
